Running Equipment

So during my rediscovering of running as a hobby I bought quite some equipment and I want to share what I like or what I dislike.

Running vest

I bought a Salomon S/Lab Pulsar 3 Running Vest. There is quite a good review here

My running vest

My personal thoughts: The pockets on the front are quite useless. My phone is too big for the zipped pocket (but the key fits). The two pockets on top of the bottles aren’t useful on trail runs. Jumping e.g. over wood causes all the items stored in the open pockets to fall out. So I will continue to combine the vest with the Salomon belt, where I will store my mobile phone and the food until I maybe manage to modify the vest by adding a velcro or button.
My windbreaker is too big for the pocket on upper back, but it fits in the lower back pocket (Unfortunately that means, no more space for additional water).

2x250ml is enough for a Half-marathon in the winter. But I can see that for the summer I might need a bigger vest.

I like the small size, which makes the vest nearly invisible under the windbreaker.

Shoes

For trail runs I bought On Cloudvista shoes. While they are very comfortable, after not even 300km the upper material is damaged. And of course who thought it would be a good idea to release trail shoes in white color. Mine are now mud-colored.

wireguard debugging

Playing around with wireguard at the moment. Terminology is a bit confusing.

  • Q: You can see the incoming “Handshake Initiation” packets on the server, but the server does not respond?
    • A: Check again that the server hat the correct pubkey configured for the client
  • Q: You have multiple peers configured but only one works?
    • A: In AllowedIPs every client needs to be on its own subnet, e.g. a /32
  • Q: Your clients can’t communicate with each other?
    • A: IP forwarding needs to be enabled

Updating unifi to debian bullseye

With version 7.5 unifi finally supports openjdk17 which means it is about time to update the vm to bullseye. Of course the mongodb dependency is still horribily outdated. Luckily old mongodb  debs for buster are still available at https://www.mongodb.com/download-center/community/releases

The unifi deb required < 5.0. 4.4 reported that it is too new for the database and 4.2 failed to migrate the database so I had to start again.

  • Download a backup of the config before upgrading.
  • After the upgrade wipe /var/lib/unifi/db
  • Create a dummy account like described here: https://gist.github.com/AmazingTurtle/e8a68a0cbe501bae15343aacbf42a1d8
  • Login and restore the backup.

KDE taskbar grouping not showing list

After a recent KDE upgrade, the taskbar grouping did not work anymore. Instead of e.g. a list of open files in gvim i had to click multiple times on the entry in the taskbar to cycle through the list of windows.

I couldn’t find the solution on google (most likely because I use the wrong terms to describe this feature) so here is a blog post to help people like me.

The solution: Right click -> Task Manager Settings -> Behaviour -> Clicking grouped Task -> Shows textual list.

Profanity IM cheat sheet

profanity IM is a nice XMPP client for the console.

Here is a list of commands, I can’t remember:

To answer a “authorization request” use

/sub allow user@jabber.service

This is article will be updated in case I have to lookup for another command….

Summer update

It is been 5 months since I last updated the blog.

So far no ECTS points for last term, due to some family problems. But the term started again, this time course on ottoman Palaeography.

Spent a great but expensive holiday in Greece.

Some payed traveling in September to Ireland, Croatia and Germany, year with the most flight miles since 2010. Due to some unfortunate events will be travel to Germany again next week.

While during summer I did lots of cycling to work. Unfortunately in September I got lazy again.
