Sunday

Nice weather (20°C and clouds), so i spent again 4 hours on my bike.
The tour today was: Home -> Handelskai -> Ölhafen Lobau -> Kraftwerk Freudenau -> Friedhof der Namenlosen -> Schwechat -> Donaukanal -> Home.

Bicyclists in Vienna

The Viennese people don’t understand the concept of bicycles. This starts with the city planners planning cycle tracks that suddendly end in the Nirvana and ends with the few people that actually use a bicycle but don’t understand that you have to switch on lights if you cycle at night.
Today i started my bicycle tour at 19:00 so after an hour it was dark while i was still cycling through the 21. district. On my way back home i counted the people with correct lights and those with no light at all.
And the ones without light were the majority. Luckily they saw me (because i had lights) otherwise i would have crashed into at least two of them.
After this expierience I will try to avoid cycling after sunset in the future.

Things Apple should fix soon…

Umlaut handling of HFS+ filenames is broken. I have several files on my UFS partition, that i can’t copy to my HFS+ because the filename contains Umlauts, cp bails out with “Invalid argument”.
What is even more surprising, Finder gives up on displaying these files too, one file is displayed with ?? and the others are invisible.

BAWAG ebanking

The news are full with information about the latest BAWAG affair. Yesterday evening i needed to pay a bill, but BAWAG Ebanking was down. Today 12 hours later it is working again, but very slow.ly
Looks like everybody is looking after the money on their bank accounts :-).

Notebook operational again

Finally.
The new Harddisk is more than twice as large and makes a bit more noise.
Friday till Sunday was spent with reinstalling and copying the backup data. I have learnt several things, e.g. the difference between Vim.app and gVim.app or how to disable the useless Spotlight feature (the root of all the sudden slowliness).
I have left 10G empty, if someone finally ports ADB-Keyboard support to FreeBSD, i am installing FreeBSD on the last partition.
Other news, last week university started, and i really missed my notebook, while trying to get used to my new timetable..

Too many CDs

I have too many CDs. I am looking for a track i knew i have on CD. It is a remix of Carl Craigs Mind of a Machine where the remixer has a lot of fun with the pitch control, but i can’t remember by whom nor on which Compilation CD it should be.
Unfortunately most of my Compilations aren’t on my hard disk, because i never figured out how to use abcde with multi-artist CDs the right way (The output should be all tracks in one folder but tagged right). So locate(1) does not work either….

Harddisk crash

After two years my iBooks Harddisk is currently in the process of dying. Lots of Disk I/O errors.
I am trying to make a backup (which takes ages because of the disk errors), then I will try a reinstall and then i will see how difficult it is to replace the disk.
I am feeling naked without a Laptop….

I want the old Google back

Recently Google started to mix results of images.google.com under the regular google results.
Hey, if i want to look for images, i can type ggi: instead of gg: But now i need to scroll down the page first, to find what i am looking for. Time to use ya: (for Yahoo!) more often.

New Gadget

Today i reorganized my server room, and decided to move the printer to the kitchen. Unfortunately my local hardware dealer did not have a WLAN-printerserver in stock, so the printer is still in the server room.
But i discovered something else. An AVM FritzFon, a cheap telephone system with VoIP support. I could not resist. Now i have a “hardphone” for my at43 account.
Getting it to work was a bit tricky, but thanks to my SIP god Hendrik it works now.
