The Read.me handed out at conference registration said “Consider the WLAN as untrusted”. I checked how many people read the Read.me and ran dsniff during the whole conference and compared the result to my universitys wlan. It was better, but I still got too many passwords:
4 POP3 Accounts, 1 non-anymous ftp account and 6 IMAP accounts.
At least one IMAP account i could map to a well known FreeBSD committer.
So if you didn’t used IMAP/SSL and especially if your password starts with “icr” you should change it, because maybe I will consider selling it to the slashdot troll.
BTW this one is really embarrassing for a BSD conference:

keynote jkh
Here are my short, badly formatted notes on jkh’s keynote.
JKH
– showed a few stats, that BSD is the most common used UNIX (even more than Linux). 12.5 Million MacOS X users (Gartner Group?), 2.5 Million FreeBSD users (netcraft).
– introduced the BSD parts of MacOS X and IOKit.
— Tiger will have UFS2 Userland based on FreeBSD 5.1
– outlined parts where Mac OS X is ahead of the BSDs, and where BSDs
needs work to stay state of the art
— Authentification ACLs, nsswitch, OpenLDAP and Co.
— Sound, FreeBSD users play mp3 and …mp3
— *BSDs don’t support embedded machines without MMU (e.g no NetBSD on the IPOD)
— Standards UNIX 03, Common Criteria etc.
— Rendevouz
– Apple using OpenGL helps people avoiding DirectX
– promises that Apple will try to cooperate better with the OSS and more actively push back changes..
– He will continue to advocate UNIX and OSS inside of Apple. In the earliy 10.0 days he had to persuade people inside Apple needed to be persuaded to ship Terminal.app, today it is getting more popular.
–> promised to put slides later onto the Conference Webpage
BTW there are nearly more Macs than FreeBSD Laptops attending.
BTW2. If you are at the Conference and use a Mac, you can fix my notes using SubEthaEdit.
Soundtrack
Last Week we learned that my life is an mpg. Since plot and actors are already known (sort of), what’s missing is the Soundtrack.
So here is the Soundtrack for “My Life – October 2004” (oh, we need a better title too..) compiled from my iTunes and JuK rotation.
Vanessa Mae – Devil’s Trill
Texas – Saint
The Pogues – A Pair of Brown Eyes
Die fantastischen Vier – 4 gewinnt
Athena – Senden, Benden, Bizden
Guesch Patti – Fleurs carnivores
Army of Lovers – Walking with a Zombie
Stephane Pompougnac – Pour faire le portrait d’un oiseau
No Doubt – Sixteen
Austria lost against Poland in football.
I am usually not interested in austrian football. My girlfriend told me that it was a nice match, Austria “nearly” won.
Nice excerpt from IRC:
10:27 < oleczek> guten tag everybody
10:29 <@uza> hey oleczek
10:29 < latoya> oleczek is trying to compile that new, cool window manager
kahakai
10:29 < oleczek> I like your bot, it’s amazing.
10:30 < oleczek> latoya: I want to say our team which isn’t that fantastic won
yesterday with your (football)
10:30 < latoya> oleczek: excuse me?
Second Blog
It is now official, I am addicted to blogging. I just started a second blog at twoday.tuwien.ac.at. This one will be in german and contain more detailed information about everything i do at TU Vienna.
The software used is antville, and I already love MT which is a lot easier to configure and has a lot less bugs. Especially i am missing the Preview-button because I am making so many typos.
Buying CDs in Vienna
Usually I am buying CDs at the Virgin Megastore, Mariahilfer Strasse. Unfortunately it is currently closed for refurbishment. Saturn doesn’t really sell CDs I like, so where do people buy CDs in Vienna?
I don’t know any other _large_ record store in Vienna :-(. Most people on IRC suggest Amazon, which is nice if you know what you want, but bad for searching around. At the Virgin you can listen to CDs for hours and there are always at least three CDs that I like.
Uninitialized TCP timer
In May I wrote about an Accesspoint panic.
Today I got a similar panic with a different Software version. This time 12.2(15)XR2:
Feedbag Error
Today I reinstalled iChat, because I read, that iChat works with ICQ (well sort of) and because the MacOS Software Update program always suggest downloading the iChat security update. While trying to configure it, I got a strange bug:
Very funny translation error *lol*
Fare dodging in Vienna
Vienna has an excellent public transport system and tickets are reasonable cheap, so many people living in Vienna have an annual ticket and there are very few ticket inspectors called “Schwarzkappler”.
Some people even considered starting an insurance that pays the extra fees if you get caught.
Although I use the subway nearly daily it happens sometimes that i don’t meet a ticket inspector for months. But sometimes you meet them everytime you enter the subway. There seems to be a rule of thumb that in the week before university starts or in the first week of the university holidays all employees of the Wiener Linien are trying to catch fare dodgers. (I wonder what they are doing the rest of the time).
From my experience the “safest” vehicle is the tram, especially in the Rush hour. Next is the S-Bahn in the City, as most of the BB inspectors are starting to control tickets shortly before the S-Bahn leaves the City (Zone 100). Buses are only safe in the Rushhour, and most dangerous is the subway.
The most dangerous stations are Schottentor, Karlsplatz and Lngenfeldgasse, because there are very few exits for a lot of people changing trains.
